Workmanship

Almost everything we make is decorated by hand. These are the kinds of work we do, what each one is, and what it asks of you in return. Every piece is made to order in our Mumbai workshop — hand work is measured in days, not minutes, so tell us your date before you commit to it.

Hand Painted

Fabric pigment, applied with a brush. Each panel is painted by hand after it is cut, so the motif is placed to suit the garment rather than repeated off a roller. No two pieces come out identical, and nothing about it is printed. Dry clean only; never scrub the painted area.

Zardozi Work

Metallic coil, sequin, bead and stone over a padded base. The heaviest hand work in the workshop — every motif is built up over padding so it stands proud of the cloth, stitched down piece by piece. Specialist dry clean only. It adds real weight, and takes longer to make than any other finish.

Zari Work

Flattened metallic thread, gold or silver, couched onto the surface with fine stitches so the metal sits on top of the cloth and catches light from across a room. Store flat, or folded with tissue between the layers so the zari does not crush.

Resham Thread Work

Silk floss, embroidered so it lies flat against the cloth, giving a soft sheen instead of a metallic glint. The lightest of the heavy works to wear, so it stays comfortable through a long function.

Embroidery

Cotton or rayon thread work carried in a repeating pattern across the panel, worked on the cut pieces so the motif sits correctly once the garment is made up. Press on the reverse, never directly onto the stitching.

Applique Work

Shapes cut from a contrast cloth and stitched onto the base with the edges turned under, giving a bold motif with a texture you can feel. Do not pull at a lifted edge — bring it in and we will re-secure it.

Hand Work & Touch-up

Hand-placed stitch, bead and sequin, added once the main work is finished and placed by eye so the motif sits right on your own pattern rather than on a standard size. A little loss over years of wear is normal, and can be re-worked for you.

Digital Print

Reactive dye printed into the cloth before it is cut, so the pattern runs true across the whole panel and carries on across the seams. The most hard-wearing of our decorated finishes — the colour will not lift.
